What is the 'Golfability' score?
Golfability is our own 0-to-10 read on how the course is actually playing that day — think of it as a golfer's antidote to the doom-and-gloom weather app. The score blends the things that truly affect your round: temperature, wind, and the chance of rain, combined with what our grounds crew is seeing out on the course — and the pro shop always has the final say. Every rating comes with a plain-English call (anywhere from 'Hardcore' to 'Phenomenal'), an hour-by-hour breakdown for today, and a five-day outlook, so you can pick the best window to get out and play. You'll find it on our Golfability page, updated throughout the day.
Are you open year-round?
We are generally open from April through November, and we will open on days outside that window whenever the weather permits. The pro shop is staffed daily throughout the season.

History & The Rebuild
When was the golf course originally founded?
The course was founded in 1966 by fourteen local weekenders who wanted a course of their own. The first nine holes opened for play in 1971, and the second nine were completed in 1974 to make it a full 18.
Who designed the golf course?
The course was designed by the legendary architectural team of George Fazio and his nephew, Tom Fazio.
When did the first holes open for play?
The front nine opened for play in 1971.
When was the full 18-hole course completed?
The back nine was completed in 1974, making Paupack Hills a full 18-hole championship course.
Why is there no clubhouse anymore?
The clubhouse burned down for the third time in January 2022, and the previous owner chose to close the course rather than rebuild. We took the course on in 2024 and spent that year bringing it back from the dead, then reopened it to the public in 2025 — and we have a five-year plan to bring it back better than it was before.
Why did the course close in 2023?
In the fall of 2023, the previous ownership walked away, maintenance ceased, and the property was in danger of being stripped for parts and disappearing entirely.
Who saved the golf course?
In the spring of 2024, Greg Johnson and his family took over the 137-acre property, backed by about 75 charter members who helped fund the revival.
What was the condition of the course when it was taken over in 2024?
Honestly, it was barely recognizable as a golf course. The greens were mostly gone, the fairways were several feet tall in places, and there was a single mower left on the grounds. We had our work cut out for us.
What was accomplished during the 2024 'Rehabilitate' phase?
2024 was the year the property went from a field back to a playable golf course. The greens were reseeded, the fairways were recovered, and the majority of the bunkers were restored. It had been in the worst shape it had seen in a decade, and over that single year it went from nearly unrecoverable to genuinely playable.
How many rounds were played in the first comeback season (2025)?
Despite a stretch of rainy weekends that delayed our opening until May, the course booked around 15,000 rounds in 2025.
What is the long-term plan for Golf Paupack?
There is a 5-year rebuild horizon aimed at turning the 137 acres into a premier year-round lakeside resort destination, rather than just a golf course with a grill.
What is planned for Phase 1 of the rebuild?
Phase 1 is about making the most of what we already have to bring year-round activities to Paupack Hills. That means building a new pro shop, moving our maintenance operation away from guest services, and remodeling our existing building into a full bar & grill complete with golf simulators, axe throwing, pool, darts, and a private party space.
Is the original Fazio routing still intact?
Yes, the original George and Tom Fazio routing remains completely intact, preserving the architectural integrity of the course.
What does the 'Re-establish' phase of 2025 mean?
2025 was about re-establishing Paupack Hills as a gem of the Poconos — showing everyone that we're back and we aren't going anywhere. We took a course that was merely playable and worked to make it phenomenal, proving our commitment to making it better than ever (which is exactly why we tackled so many of the bunkers).
Can I invest or sponsor a phase of the rebuild?
Yes — we welcome community involvement. You can inquire about equity partnerships or sponsoring specific phases of the rebuild (like a gazebo or cottage) by reaching out to Greg Johnson directly at greg@golfpaupack.com, or by calling the pro shop at (570) 776-8016 and pressing #2 to speak with him.
03 — 22 questions
Course Details & Strategy
What is the par for the course?
The course is a par 71 for men and a par 72 for ladies.
What is the total yardage from the back tees?
From the black (back) tees, the course measures 6,556 yards.
What is the course rating and slope?
From the black tees, the course rating is 73.8 and the slope is 134.
How many sets of tees are there?
There are five sets of tees on every hole to accommodate players of all skill levels: Black, Blue, White, and Red, plus Yellow youth tees.
Are there water hazards on the course?
Yes, the course features several water hazards, including holes that play along and overlook Lake Wallenpaupack and Lake Tanglwood.
What makes the 6th hole special?
Hole 6 is a 413-yard par 4 dogleg left that overlooks Lake Wallenpaupack. The tee box sits up really high, so there's a lot of elevation on this one — and a beautiful view to go with it.
Which hole is considered the signature hole?
We really have three: holes 6, 16, and 18. Holes 6 and 16 both play from high, elevated tees overlooking Lake Wallenpaupack — they're the only golf holes in the Poconos that do. Hole 18 is a fantastic finisher running right alongside Lake Tanglwood; it's a dogleg right where you can play it safe or gamble and cut the corner over the water. If you can carry it about 300 yards, you can go for the green.
Are there back-to-back par 3s?
Yes — holes 16 and 17 on the back nine are back-to-back par 3s.
What should I know about the 17th hole?
Seventeen is the second of our back-to-back par 3s, played right after the 16th. Coming on the heels of the lake view at 16, the pair makes the closing stretch a real test of your short irons and your nerve.
How does the 18th hole play?
Eighteen is a 388-yard risk/reward par 4 and a fantastic finisher, running right alongside Lake Tanglwood. It's a dogleg right: you can play it safe around the corner, or gamble and cut it over the water. If you can carry it about 300 yards, you can go for the green.
What are the greens like?
It depends on the time of year. Mid-season they're quick and true-rolling, while in the wetter months they play much more forgiving.
What are the fairways like?
The fairways are tree-lined and wooded, utilizing the natural rolling terrain of the Pocono Mountains.
Is the course walkable?
We strongly discourage walking, and on busy days we don't allow it at all. There's a lot of elevation out here and it's a challenging course to walk. A cart is included in all standard rates, so you're covered either way.
Do you have a driving range?
We don't have a driving range at this time, but we're actively exploring options to give you a place to warm up your clubs before a round.
Is there a practice green?
Yes, we have a practice putting green near the first tee. Use of the practice green is free with your paid round.
Are there any blind shots?
Yes — thanks to the rolling terrain and elevation changes, there are a handful of semi-blind shots, including on holes 2, 3, 6, 9, 10, 14, and 15. A little course knowledge or a GPS app goes a long way, especially on your first visit.
Where are the best views on the course?
Holes 6, 16, and 18. The elevated tees on 6 and 16 both look out over Lake Wallenpaupack, and the 18th plays right along Lake Tanglwood.
Is the course suitable for beginners?
Yes. With five sets of tees — including Yellow youth tees on all 18 holes — the course is designed to be enjoyable for raw beginners while still challenging highly skilled players from the tips.
What is the pace of play?
We strive for a 4-hour pace of play for 18 holes. As with any course, busy weekends can push up against the USGA limit of 4:54, but we manage our tee sheet to keep things moving.
Can I get a scorecard and yardages before I play?
Yes — scorecards with full yardages are available in the pro shop at check-in. Because the rolling terrain creates a few semi-blind shots, a rangefinder or GPS app is genuinely helpful, especially on your first visit.
Do the golf carts have GPS screens?
Our carts don't currently have GPS screens, so a rangefinder or a free GPS app on your phone is handy for distances — especially on the semi-blind shots created by the elevation changes. Scorecards with yardages are available at check-in.
Is the course hard to score on for a higher handicap?
From the back tees it's a genuine championship test (slope 134, rating 73.8), but with five sets of tees you can play it at a length that fits your game. Move up a set and it's very enjoyable — the layout rewards smart, comfortable golf over raw distance.

Do you rent pull carts?
We don't — and pull carts actually aren't permitted here. Between the significant elevation and the potential for turf damage, we keep everyone in riding carts (which are included in every standard rate anyway).

When is the last tee time for 18 holes?
The last tee time for a full 18 holes is approximately 3 hours before dusk. Since that shifts with the seasons, call the pro shop at (570) 776-8016 to confirm the cutoff for the day you'd like to play.
When is the last tee time for 9 holes?

Do I need to print my booking confirmation?
No, showing your confirmation on your smartphone at the pro shop counter is perfectly fine.
What time should I arrive for my tee time?
We recommend arriving about 20 minutes before your tee time to check in, load your cart, and roll a few putts on the practice green.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards and cash, both in the pro shop and at On The Green.
What if I'm running late for my tee time?
Call the pro shop at (570) 776-8016 as soon as you know and we'll do our best to fit you in. On a busy sheet we may need to move you to the next open slot, so arriving about 20 minutes early is always the safest bet.
Can I bring my own food or drinks onto the course?
Absolutely. You're welcome to bring your own food anytime, and while we're waiting on our liquor license, you're welcome to BYOB as well. Just bring a cooler if you'd like to keep things cold, since our carts don't come stocked.
